Frequently Asked Questions
What do the debutantes wear? Do they need to wear gloves?
Debutantes traditionally wear white, floor length evening gowns for their presentation. They must wear white elbow length gloves if the dress is strapless or cap sleeve for their photographs as well as the presentation. If the dress has longer sleeves, debutantes usually wear shorter gloves.
Does the debutante need an escort?
Debutantes are escorted by a young man for their presentation. If the debutante has a brother, family member or close family friend around her age, she can have him escort her. She may also have the committee assign her an escort.
When should the debutante and her family arrive in New York City?
The ball will be held on Saturday, December 28th, 2024. Debutantes and their families usually arrive on December 26th as festivities begin on December 27th with a Mother/Daughter luncheon, Father's luncheon and Pre-Ball Cocktail Party. What should the father of the debutante and escort wear?
The fathers and escorts of debutantes should wear full evening dress (black tail coat, black trousers, white shirt with pique front, white pique vest, white tie and, for the escorts, white gloves as well) and can be rented locally in New York City.
What is a debutante today?
A debutante today has come a long way from its original definition. Today, a debutante is a young woman of college age interested in upholding the tradition of making her entrance into adulthood. Debutantes raise money for charity, make valuable personal connections, and are actively involved in the community. Debutantes enjoy the event's parties, pageantry, and fun with family and friends, as well as experience the glamour and sophistication of a ball in New York City during the Holidays.
